I’m sure by now, most of you are aware of the super Typhoon Haiyan that hit the Philippines last Friday. It is said to be one of the largest recorded storms in history. It has caused major devastation amongst most of the nation and it has been estimated that 10,000 people have passed due to the storm.
My mother, Maria Nena A. Barger or (A. Ayad Verana) was visiting the Philippines when the storm hit. I have had no contact with her since October 17th (my birthday), when she called me to wish me a happy birthday and she’ll see me when she gets back. My father told me that there was a good chance she was in Manilla (where my Aunts lived, however I’m not sure how valid that is since it’s been 20+ years since he went over there), which would mean that she wasn’t hit too bad by the storm. However, according to the people finder website that google created in attempt to reconnect loved ones who were displaced by the storm, she was in fact in Tacloban, the city that was hit the hardest due to the storm. What makes matters worse is that my 10 year old half-sister, Reyna Maria Ayad Postadan was with her as well. Since there is no electricity or cell service, I have not been able to make any contact with them. I found out from my mother’s friend (because of the google finder website), that my mother was supposed to be in Manilla on the 11th. That is all I know. If you, a family member, family of a military member or US Embassy know any information about my family members whereabouts, please let me know by a messaging me here, Facebook, Twitter, wherever.
I know this is the longest of long shots in the world, but when your family members are basically missing, you do anything and everything possible that you can. I’m not looking for sympathy, I’m looking for awareness and hopefully a miracle. Natural disasters happen all the time, but usually they don’t happen to you; nor do they usually affect you in a great magnitude to this extent.
How can you help? I’m not going to plead you all to donate money. I know times are tough for a lot of people. For those of you who are able to donate, please check out this link with a long list of places to donate. If anything, I want anyone and everyone who reads to be informed about this natural disaster/other terrible disasters that happen daily, and cherish the time you get to spend with your loved ones. It’s a long shot that a situation like this will happen to you in your lifetime, but if it does, please let your family know you love them.
Things are going to get worse and worse until I find out.
I should post more or something.
